Important because ___________________________________________ Assyrian Empire: (Present day Turkey, Syria, Iran, Iraq) *Built large and powerful military (defend hills and fertile valleys) *Fought w/ iron swords, spears, slingshots, bows and arrows *Learned from the Hittites (people from the north) *Robbed people, set crops on fire, destroyed towns and dams; brutal Many surrendered without fighting *Government: Monarchy (king) Empire reached from Persian Gulf to the Nile River Divided into provinces (political districts ruled by people chosen by the king) Built roads to connect provinces Chosen officials governed, collected taxes, and enforced laws *Harsh law codes Writing, gods, and customs similar to Babylonia Assyrians: *Wrote and collected stories- Built library in Nineveh (25,000 tablets) *Farming and trading were important *Due to harsh rule, people rebelled (empire lasted 300 yrs.)
Chaldeans: *Conquered by the Assyrians (1,000 B.C.) Never completely accepted Assyrian rule due to harshness *Assyrians started fighting with each other so Nebopolassar, a Chaldean king, reclaimed the land for Babylon
New Babylon: * 612 B.C.- captured Nineveh and burnt it to the ground *Nebuchadnezzar created a new kingdom- made Babylon the capital again and the largest and richest city in the world Created the “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” (1 of the 7 wonders of the ancient world) Unique irrigation system to reach all terraces Grand ziggurats and palaces Built beautiful streets paved with limestone and marble; lined with blue glazed tile Center for trading due to location Fall of the Empire: Weak kings (after Nebuchadnezzar died) Poor harvests Slow trade 539 B.C. Persia takes over- allowed people to keep their culture, preserving their achievements
