India- A to Z BookOur next adventure leads us to India (Chapter 9). As we search for inner peace, we will be learning all about ancient India, including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. The purpose of the project is to help American children better understand the various regions of the world and their cultures. This new series of books will first publish a children’s book focused on the nation of India and its history and culture. Chandra Gupta Mauryan takes over Ganges Valley, then almost all of N. India Capital city: Pataliputra- Strong army; spy system; postal system Ashoka (Chandra Gupta’s grandson) rules (273 B.C.- 232 B.C.) Strong military leader (Grew to hate war) Spend life trying to make peace/ followed the teaching of Buddha Built hospitals for people and animals Built new roads with coverings and shade trees (travelers could rest) Sent Buddhists out to teach Buddhism/ Had “Stupas” built (shrines) Tolerant of other religions (let Hindus remain Hindus) Trade was good due to road system and Ashoka’s strong rule After Ashoka’s death, kingdom declines: weak rulers, bad decisions, mistreatment of tax payers and farmers. Last king killed by one of his generals- remaining kingdoms fight among themselves. Empire declines… (Fighting lasts 500 years- India not united) Gupta Empire: “Golden Age” Gupta Dynasty- founded by Chandra Gupta A.D. 320. India is sub to the bigger land Asia Farming villages mostly in this Indus Valley But the guru still teaches To enlighten you on your way. The monsoon winds blow east and west mainly in the spring, warm winds are the best with the rains sweeping across the Himalayas high Making thing soggy-soggy wet- oh my! Mahavira developed that Jainism thing With Ahimsa as the practice of not harming Any living plant, creature, or being Can’t hurt the worms- so no one did any farming Successfully trading iron during the Gupta Making sturdy structures for every stupa Correct and acceptable behavior Were the lessons of the epics With the gods to guide the heroes Always helping make the right picks. Are you a farmer- Are you enjoying your dharma? It will be reflected when deciding your karma- Live your life well and you move on up When you reincarnate with a bigger cup!
